PRESIDENT’S LETTER
We are nearing springtime (although some days the weather may belie the
fact) and it is not a moment too soon for me! I do appreciate winter,
but shorter is better.
Our Brunch was very successful--and many thanks to all who helped and
all who attended. A more lengthy report written by Marlene Byrne is
included. Many things are coming up soon. The board set Tuesday, May
12, late afternoon, as the date for our Annual Meeting. Location to be
determined and more information to follow. The Nominating Committee has
been activated under the direction of Elise Swan. Positions to be
filled are: President, Vice-President, or Co-presidents, Secretary, and
two Directors.
As many of you know, the speaker we had scheduled for February did not
show up. Her schedule had become very hectic and she forgot about the
commitment to us. I do understand how something like that could happen
and I take it as a good lesson for me to always check with the speaker
as the date draws near. Although we did not have anything for MECT to
tape, we made good use of the time in discussing things pertaining to
League. As a result we have a committee in place to begin work on the
Brunch for 2010. At this time, there is not a chair, but there is much
that can be done and decided as a group. Thanks to all who volunteered
to help. Other things were discussed and it was a fruitful time.
At our invitation, Marge Easley (State President) and Libby
Medley(State Liaison to our League) met with our Board prior to our
Board Meeting on Feb. 26 to discuss ways to do what we need to do (and
would like to do) in the event our group doesn’t grow as much or as
soon as we’d like. It was a good discussion and suggestions came forth,
which we will be sharing--tentatively at the Annual Meeting. One thing
we discussed during the Board Meeting was to have our Board Meeting on
the 4th Tuesday of the month immediately following the unit meeting,
and any member wanting to stay would be welcome to do so. We will see
how this works out both for the restaurant and the board.
The speaker for our Water Study Public Information Meeting this month
(March 10) is Marnie Lonsdale, a member of the LWVOR Water Study
Committee. This is such an important issue and I urge you to study the
booklet recently sent you from the LWVOR office. Water is indeed the
most precious commodity and we need to pay attention to it.
The April 14th Public Information meeting will feature John Sygeilski
(“Dr. Ski”) the new President of Mt. Hood Community College. Twice I
have heard him speak and am definitely looking forward to hearing him a
third time. Do attend this meeting (with questions if you have them)
and be prepared to learn and be entertained!
Hope to see many of you at the PIM on the 10th

Review of the 2009 EMCO Brunch by Marlene Byrne
The brunch this year was wonderful. I have never seen a gathering of a local league with such enthusiasm.
Of course we were all looking forward to our guest speaker, Betty
Roberts. Needless to say she did not disappoint the gathering. One of
the ladies who came with me later told me she felt her husband would
have enjoyed this so much and wondered why more men weren’t there. This
comment gave me some food for thought because I should remember that
the League is for men too.
I do hope all of you bought Betty Roberts’ book. As I read it I
wondered which rock I happened to be under during the 70s and part of
the 80s. I have really learned so much about Oregon, its people and of
course politics. The personal things she tells in there really hit home
too. It is a great read and makes for some good conversation.
All of the work the Brunch and Membership Committees did really paid
off. Things went so smoothly and the environment seemed so warm and
inviting. All the invitation cards that were sent out must have worked
because there was a large crowd. Unfortunately Betty C. said we did not
get any new members from the brunch.

RAFFLE TICKET INFORMATION for the State League
Call Shirley Luttropp for
tickets to buy and/or sell (503-665-4649). This not only benefits the
State League, but benefits EMCO as well.
Every
other year, during odd years, the LWVOR holds a raffle to offset
expenses. This year’s Raffle prize choices have just been announced.
¨ A Trip to Maui for Two,
which includes airfare for two from Portland, Seattle, San Francisco,
Los Angeles or San Diego to Maui including taxes, 7 nights including
taxes, a one bedroom condo, 8 days compact car rental with unlimited
mileage, driver pays gas. ($3000 value)
OR
¨ Cash Award of $2,500 (maximum cash award allowed by the OR DOJ)
Each
raffle ticket costs $10.00 and only 2,000 tickets are printed. The
drawing will be held at the annual convention on May 16, 2009, Saturday
night at 8 PM. The winner does not have to be present.
The
Raffle will raise about $15,000 after expenses for the prize, fees,
postage, and printing, and has turned out to be an important revenue
component to our budget. It raises funds to support Action activities
and keeps convention costs and other expenses, such as PMP, down. It
identifies non-members who are willing to support our programs.
Not
only does this benefit LWVOR, but it also raises funds for local
Leagues. If we sell the exact number of tickets as our total number of
members, our League will receive $1 back for each ticket sold. Tickets
sold over the membership number will earn us a $2 benefit per ticket
sold. For example, if our total is 100 and we sell 120 tickets, our
earnings will total $140. That is, $100 for the first 100 tickets sold
plus 20 times $2 = $40, therefore the $140 total.
Please help LWVOR and
our League by buying some for yourself and selling some to friends and
family.
